Jonas' Speaker Test Songs
"Funk"
should sound well balanced throughout the frequency spectrum on
any set of speakers. If something is booming, tizzing or jumping
out at you in the middle of the frequency range you should probably
move on to another set of speakers.
The acoustic
bass on "Jingle"
is a sonic disaster. It was incorrectly and needlessly overprocessed
with Waves R-Bass. The sound goes "wwhooompff". This
should sound terrible on speakers that accurately reproduce the
bottom octave. If you play this on a car stereo with hyped bass,
you'll quickly understand what I'm talking about. If the monitors
you're listening to don't reveal this defect be aware that bass
translation may be probelmatic with that set of speakers.
The middle frequencies of a speaker will get a
good workout with "Vibes/Bass".
The dynamic levels of the vibraphone should vary quite a bit on
this one. Be aware of speakers that flatten out or compress the
dynamics in this region. Speakers that do this tend to make everything
sound good even when it isn't. The bass on this song is interesting.
It's extremely difficult to pick out the fundamental of the bass
on the vast majority of speakers. If are able to hear these tones
clearly, you have a speaker with superior bass response. Although
it may be nice to be able to hear these tones, you'll have to
be careful to check your mixes on other speakers whose bass isn't
so magnificent.
